Baja Mexico November 2013

I have been wanting to explore Baja for many years. I almost went two years ago, but the trip fell through at he last minute. Some folks from the NCLR (NorCal Land Rover) Club made a trip in May and that was the motivation I needed to get down there. I started planning the trip many months in advance and wanted to stay on the Sea of Cortex side. Bay of Gonzaga was my planned destination with the possibility of heading to Bahia de Los Angeles (BOLA). I mentioned to the trip to my buddy Tyler who said his father-in-law has a place near Bay of Gonzaga. I spoke with Gordon on the phone and he was heading down for a few months. It was very reassuring for Cara, my wife, to know we had a contact down there and that Gordon has been enjoying Baja for 30+ years. Once in Baja, we had no set plans and were excited to see where the trip would take us.

My buddy Dan and I headed down from Sacramento with a loaded P38 Range Rover and met up with Alex and Angie from the So Cal Land Rover Club in El Centro at the border. After a nice stay at the Fairfield Inn, we crossed the border with a simple inspection of the vehicle. We got our FMM (tourist visas) stamped, changed out some dollars to pesos and headed out of Mexicali to San Felipe. We found some folks with a blowout in an Explorer and tried to help, but they had big aftermarket rims with different lug nuts and none of our tools fit correctly. We left them with some water and food and continued on to San Felipe. Stopped at El Cortez hotel and restaurant for some fish tacos and fajitas and took in the incredible views of the Sea of Cortez.
